It was a shot straight down on industrials with the Dow suffering yet another 3-digit loss while tech had a more haphazard day with the S&P barely reaching break-even but the Nasdaq had a better time boosted by a 2.6% upsurge in Nvidia as well as 1.3% from Apple. The good news was a drop in retail sales of more than 1% over December which might bolster the case for rate cuts, always a boost for tech.

The market was also encouraged by Trump’s announcement of only reciprocal tariffs with no mention of any new tariffs. The odds for rate cuts remain 100% for one but have moved up to 50% for a second cut. But as today’s expert put it, the bottom line remains “it’s all about Trump right now. Everything else is just noise. Everyone is focused on what will Trump do next, and where are his tariff wars going?” Volume remains just below the 15.0 billion average, coming in at 14.4 billion.
