There was nothing but good news today starting with a host of upbeat earnings reports and compounded by a CPI report showing that, though inflation remains elevated, it’s not as bad as was expected thereby offering some relief to the fears of the tariffs stoking more. The CPI is one of the very few reports the government has decided to issue during the shutdown and also one of the most important inflation gauges.

Consequently, all three indexes soared to new records, the Dow and Nasdaq reaching impressive 3-digit gains. This report also nailed down a virtual certainty of another rate cut at next week’s Fed meeting. 143 S&P companies have now reported with 87% beating estimates, propelling the earnings forecast today to 10.4% vs 9.9 yesterday vs 8.8 three weeks ago. Next week comes Meta, Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Apple, Boeing, and Caterpillar. Volume came in below the 20.75 average, today at 19.04 billion.
