With a slew of megacap earnings coming later this week and increased optimism that the huge investments in AI will soon start translating into profits, all three indexes headed straight up today with 3-digit gains in both tech and industrials. Investors will be looking to see if the continuing concerns over high tech valuations are justified. It’s a fragile equation though. Even a slight setback could cause a big AI selloff.

The Fed meets Tuesday and Wednesday is widely expected to hold rates steady, but the report will be closely watched for signs of future rate policy. Overshadowing all this will be the question of continuing Fed independence as the DOJ investigates Powell and Trump prepares to name a new Fed chair. Given the chaos with ICE, shares of private prison operators, which have the contracts for the illegals, fell sharply. Volume remains above the 17.6 average, coming in today at 18.4 billion shares traded.
