This weekend, as Public Television starts its holiday pledge drives, we are revisiting a recent interview with Russ Kinnel, Morningstar’s long-time mutual fund maven.

Kinnel is Director of Manager Research for Morningstar, where he heads the firm’s North American Morningstar analyst ratings committees, which vet the Morningstar medalist ratings. As regular viewers know we often cite them on WEALTHTRACK. 

Kinnel is also the editor of the monthly “Morningstar FundInvestor” newsletter, writes the “Fund Spy” column for Morningstar.com and has published numerous studies on the mutual fund industry.  As his bio says: “Since joining Morningstar in 1994, Kinnel has analyzed virtually every type of fund and covered the most prominent fund families.“

In our discussion Kinnel reveals how Morningstar chooses a select group of mutual funds every year to be in its “The Thrilling” fund list and shares a review of the top ten holdings in his personal portfolio.
