New Market Regime

For your Sunday reading pleasure I submit the latest of episode of the PBS program WealthTrack in its discussion of what is now known at the New Market Regime, what it means and how it influences allocation strategies.  Stay warm everyone!  (I experienced 9 outages at my place on Saturday so it's been an interesting weekend, to say the least.  It turned out to be a defective transformer and DTE fixed it late Saturday afternoon, pleased to announce there have been no further incidents, knock wood as the temps dip below zero.)

“The world is different now. We’re in a new regime.” That is the assertion of Sébastien Page, a chief investment officer at T. Rowe Price and head of its Global Multi-Asset division where he oversees more than $425 billion in assets, including $350 billion-plus in target-date portfolios. His team also manages other asset allocation portfolios including the T. Rowe Price Global Allocation Fund and the T. Rowe Price Balanced Fund, both rated 4-star Gold by Morningstar.

Considered to be a financial thought leader in asset allocation and expert in portfolio diversification, Page wrote a book on the subject titled Beyond Diversification: What Every Investor Needs to Know About Asset Allocation. You can find the two interviews I did with Page on the topic on wealthtrack.com.

In this weekend’s episode Page describes what he means by the “new market regime,” how it has influenced his overall allocation strategies and in particular the changes he and his team are making to T. Rowe Price’s target-date portfolios. The actions he is taking are applicable to individual portfolios as well.
