Exciting Bond Returns
May 9, 2024
Dear WEALTHTRACK Subscriber,
What do you do for an encore if you knocked the lights out running the world’s largest actively managed bond fund? We found out in this week’s WEALTHTRACK episode.
Our guest is Dan Ivascyn, the Group Chief Investment Officer of bond giant PIMCO. Ivascyn, who celebrated his 25th anniversary with the firm last year, is also Lead Portfolio Manager of the PIMCO Income, Credit Hedge Fund and Mortgage Opportunistic strategies.
Among his fund responsibilities is the PIMCO Income fund, the world’s largest fixed-income fund with $147 billion dollars under management. Ivascyn launched the fund in 2007 and has run it ever since.
PIMCO Income gained 9.3% in 2023, trouncing its Morningstar multi-sector bond category and benchmark. (The fund’s institutional shares are rated five-star Gold by Morningstar and four-star Silver for investor shares.) It also far outperformed both category and benchmark in the three and five-year periods, generating positive returns despite weathering the worst bond market ever in 2022. Its track record since inception is also outstanding, delivering nearly seven percent annualized returns as of the end of the first quarter, versus a paltry three percent annualized return for the industry's benchmark.
Ivascyn was named Morningstar’s U.S. Fixed-Income Manager of the Year in 2013 and was inducted into the Fixed Income Analysts Society Hall of Fame in 2019.
In this wide-ranging interview, Ivascyn’s first on WEALTHTRACK, he discusses PIMCO’s outlook, major investment themes and specific strategies to take advantage of what he says are the most attractive bond returns in years, even rivaling stocks! In our online EXTRA interview, he shares what he does to decompress from the demands of the job.
In addition to public television, the show can be seen on our website over the weekend. The WEALTHTRACK podcast is available on SoundCloud as well as iTunes and Spotify. Have a lovely Mother’s Day and make the week ahead a healthy, profitable and productive one! Best regards, Consuelo |
