Both the S&P and Nasdaq closed near flat as the rotation from tech to industrials continued seeing the Dow add a respectable 262 points. Talk of resumed peace negotiations were the plus side to the day’s dynamics but continuing attacks created the downside. But really, it’s just a bunch of fence-sitting as investors await a slew of major Q2 reports later this week, not to mention the Fed report on Wednesday as well as PCE coming Thursday.
The spiking price of oil has renewed fears of a rate hike announcement this week for which odds are now set at 38%. Last week’s middling reports also put the fear of a waning AI rally into the market. The chip index continues to fall, another 2.1% today, putting it now 21% below its June record but still 63% up for the year. Other good news includes the S&P earnings growth projection up today to a whopping 39%. This compares to 26% last Monday and 19.2 in April. Volume at 15.8 billion is still below the 18.2 average, but catching up.
