Mixed results from tech stocks today triggered concerns about the direction they’re heading and led the Nasdaq down considerably though all the indexes did well in the morning. The Dow was up over 200 at 1 pm and the S&P up over 15, the Nasdaq having started the day seriously in the red but then zoomed back at 11 a.m. to break-even by noon only to start tumbling at 1 pm like the others. Despite the positive morning, all closed modestly in the red except the Nasdaq which closed down a more serious 3-digits.

With the threats on the Red Sea and oil once again spiking, investors are being cautious and awaiting more reports on tech, especially Alphabet and Tesla coming tomorrow. With the thick earnings schedule this week, the markets will be subject to more volatility with each good report causing a rally, each bad triggering a pullback. Despite it all, the Philly chip index closed up 0.4% with three straight gains but that’s not too surprising as it comes back from last week’s drubbing. Crude futures rose to their highest since June 11th. With nerves being rattled, volume at 15.16 remains well below the 19.05 billion average.
