Weaker retail sales data combined with a drop in confidence once again in AI brought all three indexes down after yesterday’s tech rally and another S&P record. The kicker was Applied Materials which, though it turned in a glowing Q3 forecast, was not enough to satisfy the high expectations and thus the share price fell and that again impacted overall AI sentiment as being overwrought, dropping other AI chip stocks.

Applied Materials stock has doubled so far this year. Q2 earnings growth has surged to 52%, both the S&P and Nasdaq had slight gains for the week making 3 consecutive weeks of gains. Optimism for no rate increase in September today stands at 67% vs 63 yesterday and 48 Monday. The Strait of Hormuz remains at a near standstill with no end in sight. Volume was exceedingly light at 9.6 billion vs a 17.4 average, reflecting market nerves and its wait-and-see mode.
