After Thursday’s severe drubbing, tech stocks had a bit of a recovery today. Both indexes started well into the black, the Nasdaq up over 500 by noon, the S&P over 90, then both began a gradual deceleration but both still ended the day reasonably in the black, though regaining a fraction of what was lost yesterday. Correspondingly, the Dow started the day deeply in the red down over 500 but then almost immediately rebounded to reach a high of a +140 by noon before declining to a 237 point loss at close.
Yesterday’s rush out of AI is now described as a “knee-jerk” reaction and is even considered good news by providing better long-term buying opportunities. “We still think AI is the dominant theme is this bull market.” But all three indexes suffered yet another week of losses, the Nasdaq 3.4%, S&P 2.7 and Dow 0.9%. The S&P in fact had its worst week in over a year. Payrolls came in better than expected and the unemployment rate fell to 4.1% suggesting continuing resilience in the labor market. December rate hike odds grew substantially today, up to 78% from the previous 70%. Per the CBOE, volume came in at 20.8 billion, well below yesterday’s frantic 26.9 selloff but well above the 17.7 average.
