It was certainly a very volatile day as all three indexes dipped well into the red in the morning, the Dow down almost 300 by 12:30, then all three began a rebound with the Dow recapturing most but not all of its losses by close, but tech actually making it a bit into the black. The Nasdaq especially gained over 100 as investors continue to digest inflation data and the first Fed rate hike in years while trying to determine the next steps. What likely helped tech was the Chinese serving as an intermediary with Iran to try to stop the attacks on Saudi Arabia and its oil routes.
Otherwise, everyone’s playing it close to the vest juggling the competing scenarios of anticipation of the rate hike earlier in the week vs the aftermath since Wednesday. The odds of an October hike are now at 54.5% vs 53% yesterday vs 42% last week and 7% a month ago. Volume was an astounding 25.3 billion vs the 16.2 average. Usually, when there’s this huge a jump it’s because of triple-witching though there’s no mention of that in this article. But I googled it and indeed today was a triple-witching day with $7T changing hands, the second highest on record. It also means the number can’t be trusted. Monday.
